Rey Leonardo Guerrero as the new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff.</p><p>In a letter dated Oct. 25 addressed to Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, Duterte designated Guerrero as the new military chief in place of outgoing Chief of Staff Eduardo Año. </p><p>Guerrero, a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1984, will hold the position for only around 2 months as he is set to retire in December. </p><div class="embed-wrap"><figure data-feedback="fb:likes,fb:comments"><img src="http://sa.kapamilya.com/absnews/abscbnnews/media/2017/news/10/25/guerrero-appointment.jpg?ext=.jpg"/></figure></div><p>Prior to his appointment, Guerrero was the commanding general of the Eastern Mindanao Command, which covers Davao City.</p><p>Prior to Año&#x27;s appointment last year, rumors swirled that the President would choose Guerrero, perceived to be his close friend.</p><p>In December, Duterte explained that his decision to pick Año as military chief was based on the <a href="http://news.abs-cbn.com/news/12/07/16/duterte-ao-chosen-as-military-chief-due-to-seniority">seniority rule</a>.</p><p>Año is a year ahead of Guerrero. He began his military service on March 11, 1983.<br/> </p>

<p>Guerrero, who succeeds General Eduardo Año, is set to retire in December and may only hold the position for around 2 months.</p>
