LOOK: PHLPost issues Marcos centenary stamp

The Philippine Postal Corp. (PHLPost) has issued a commemorative stamp for the 100th birth anniversary of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

The stamp was issued September 11, 2017 and will be on sale until September 10, 2018.

Sold for P12 each, PHLPost printed 50,000 pieces of the stamp which bears the signature and portrait of Marcos.

It was designed by Victorino Z. Serevo.

Marcos ruled the Philippines for two decades and put the entire country under martial law in 1972, during which time thousands of suspected communist rebels and political foes were killed.

Some independent experts have estimated that as much as $10 billion in public funds were stolen during Marcos’ rule.

Marcos was overthrown in a 1986 People Power uprising and died in exile a few years later. His family started to win back political power after returning to the Philippines in the 1990s.

His wife Imelda is a congresswoman, daughter Imee is Ilocos Norte governor, and his son Bongbong has sought a vote recount after finishing runner-up in last year’s vice presidential election.

President Rodrigo Duterte allowed Marcos to be buried with military honors at the heroes’ cemetery in Manila last year, despite strong opposition, saying he was fulfilling a campaign promise and all presidents were entitled to be buried there. - with a report from Reuters
