MANILA - The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) on Tuesday junked an appeal that called for the suspension of fare hikes in Metro Manila.

A commuter earlier asked the LTFRB to recall an order to increase fares as jeep and bus drivers earn more than the minimum wage, compared to some commuters.

Earlier this month, the LTFRB approved the increase of minimum jeepney fare to P10 from P9; and Metro Manila buses fare to P13 from P12 for air-conditioned units, and P11 from P10 for ordinary units.

The LTFRB did not raise the minimum fare of provincial buses, but allowed them to charge P1.55 for every kilometer after the first 5 kms, higher than the current P1.40.

The higher fare scheme was approved due to rising fuel costs, LTFRB chairman Martin Delgra earlier said.
