DA NANG, VIETNAM - A planned bilateral meeting between President Rodrigo Duterte and U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Da Nang, Vietnam might not push through, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Tuesday.

Lopez, however, said there are still opportunities for the two leaders to interact during the APEC Summit that will take place from Nov. 8 to 10.

There's also a slim chance of a one-on-one meeting between Duterte and Trump the following week during the ASEAN Summit in Manila.

Duterte is likely to have bilateral meetings instead with Russia, Chile, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. The president may also hold a dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Lopez said observers should look out for Duterte's keynote address on Thursday that will tackle on regional economic integration.

During the summit, the Philippine delegation will follow-up on Russia's commitment of importing P2.5 billion worth of agricultural products that was made in a bilateral meeting of both nations during last year's APEC Leaders Meeting in Lima, Peru.

Lopez said they are also looking forward to forge a free trade agreement deal with the U.S.

The Philippines currently receives preferential treatment for select import items under the U.S. Generalized System of Preferences. - report from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
