MANDAUE CITY - Mayor Luigi Quisumbing has declared a ban on firecrackers in all 27 barangays in the city.

Quisumbing said the ban is intended to prevent accidents and fire caused by firecrackers.

He added that the city is aiming for zero firecracker-related incidents in this year's Christmas and New Year celebrations.

However, establishments may apply for clearance to display firecrackers at "firecracker zone" South Reclamation Area, according to the city's Bureau of Fire Protection.

Mandaue City Fire Marshall Sr. Insp. Josephus Alburo said malls are allowed to display fireworks and pyrotechnics if they will use these only for media presentation.

Mandaue is the first local government unit in Cebu to impose a firecracker ban, which is in accordance with President Rodrigo Duterte's executive order issued in June.
