"The dialogue and coordination with the government is happening in a more predictable manner — which is great because it means we have a common agenda. We know where we have to be," said UN Philippines Resident Coordinator Gustavo Gonzalez.

However, UN's Senior Human Rights Advisor Signe Poulsen underscored that there are still many challenges left to resolve in the Philippines, especially in terms of human rights violations. She said that the nation has a "longstanding history of human rights [abuses]" especially against activists and the media, may it be in terms of physical safety or legal battles.

Aside from political conflicts, Poulsen shared that economic and educational problems must also be tackled. She said no Filipino has to be left behind in terms of quality education, just labor practice, and livable salary.

The UN month kicks off on Tuesday with the ceremonial lighting of the globe at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. It will be followed by various events throughout October like workshops, workers’ initiatives, forums, caravans, and commemorations that underline the situation and rights of marginalized sectors.
