MANILA – The University of the Philippines Cinema (UP Cinema) and various progressive groups gathered at the UP Oblation to commemorate the 10th death anniversary of Jennifer Laude on Friday.Members of activist groups, including the League of Filipino Students, lit candles after UP Cinema held a free screening of the 2018 film “Call Her Ganda” by PJ Raval.This is to call for justice as US Marine Lance Cpl. Joseph Scott Pemberton was granted an “absolute pardon” by former President Rodrigo Duterte in 2020 despite being convicted of homicide in 2015 for Laude’s death.“Ngayon po ay 10th death anniversary ni Jennifer Laude at ang pinaka latest development naman sa kaniya ay yung pagkaka-pardon sa murderer nya na si Lance Corporal Joseph Scott Pemberton at wala na binaon na sa limot ng gobyernong ito,” Elle Buntag, a transwoman, said.“Sa pagtitipon na ito gustong [naming] ipahiwatig na ang hustisya para kay Jennifer Laude ay ang pagtatapos ng hindi pantay na kasunduan kasama ng United States of America,” Buntag said.According to Buntag, the government should end the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) with the US.“Bakit ba kasi nawalan ng hustisya si Jennifer Laude? Bakit nakatakas si Joseph Pemberton sa pananagutan nya? Dahil hinahayaan katulad ng kasunduang visiting forces agreement na ang mga sundalong Amerikano ay malayang gumawa ng mga kasalanan sa sambayanang Pilipino at takasan na lamang ito dahil sa pag-aakala o panlilinlang na ang mga sundalong Amerikano ay nagdudulot ng ating pagtatanggol [at] depensa sa ating bayan,” Buntag said.“Pero sa actual wala namang idinulot yung presensya ng mga sundalong Amerikano sa bansa kundi kahirapan, karahasan, at kung ano yung nakikita sa nangyari kay Jennifer Laude.”Buntag mentioned that they are also planning to organize film screenings in various schools to raise awareness about the injustice surrounding Laude’s death.“Malaking usapin yung kaso nya eh at mahalagang malaman ng mga kabataan ngayon bakit nga ba ‘di makatwiran yung presensya ng mga militar na Amerikano sa bansa at ano yung tungkulin ng mga bata na bigyang hustisya yung pagkamatay ni Jennifer Laude [at] bigyan ng hustisya yung lahat ng biktima ng mga sundalong Amerikano na marami sa kanila ay walang mga pangalan pero alam natin na nangyayari yun,” Buntag said.Laude, a 26-year-old transwoman, was found dead in a motel room in Olongapo City on Oct. 11, 2024, with her head submerged in the toilet, with bruises and abrasions all over her body.
