The Sandiganbayan Building II is a multi-storey office building that will be constructed on a 2,588 square meter vacant lot behind the Sandiganbayan Centennial Building.

"We break ground for the Sandiganbayan Building II, which from the design carefully prepared by the UP BRS [University of the Philippines Building Research Services] with the help of the UP NEC [National Engineering Center], promises to be a model for all court buildings in the judiciary," he said.

Gesmundo lauded the vision and design for the new building to be a "green building."

"I read [that green building] means environmentally responsible and resource efficient across the building lifecycle or designed to minimize the negative impact and maximize the positive impact the building has on its natural environment and human occupants. On that score alone, on it being energy efficient and healthier for its users, this structure is worth looking forward to," he said.

"Without question, the building's design agrees with the outcomes that we hope to achieve with the SPJI [Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations] which are efficiency, access and innovation… At this time of increasing uncertainties and unprecedented challenges, we must level up institutional capacities and resources. While we work towards bringing our services more effectively and efficiently, we must remember justice is for all," the Chief Justice added.
"Without question, the building's design agrees with the outcomes that we hope to achieve with the SPJI [Strategic Plan for Judicial Innovations] which are efficiency, access and innovation… At this time of increasing uncertainties and unprecedented challenges, we must level up institutional capacities and resources. Gesmundo was appointed Sandiganbayan Associate Justice in October 2005. He later became Chairperson of the Seventh Division.

The proposed building will have 13 floors and two levels of basement parking. It aims to accommodate all seven divisions and employees of the Sandiganbayan.

"The new building is designed to house almost 600 employees and officers of the court and properly address the needs of its clientele ranging from court hearings and the provision of clearances for tens of thousands of government employees," Associate Justice Karl Miranda, Co-Chairperson of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds said.

"It will have courtrooms furnished with the latest Information Communication and Technology equipment that is designed to help speed up the court’s work in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directive of providing swift and fair administration of justice for all," Miranda said.

The University of the Philippines Building Research Services will prepare the Detailed Architectural and Engineering Design under agency-to-agency mode of procurement.
