MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration is still waiting for paperwork from the Philippine National Police before it can take custody of 69 foreign nationals arrested in an alleged scam hub in Manila, the agency said Saturday.

The bureau noted that the PNP has announced he arrests but that “at this time, however, the Bureau of Immigration has not yet received official custody of these individuals.”

The 69 were arrested last Tuesday in a Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group raid on an alleged scam hub in Malate, Manila that targeted other foreigners whom they convinced to invest in cryptocurrency scams.

“Following established procedures and protocols, the BI awaits the necessary documentation from the PNP to initiate the formal turnover process, as has been previously communicated,” the bureau also said.

Among the information that the PNP needs to document and turnover ar the suspects’ identities and the affidavits of arrest.

The BI said it can refer foreign victims of human trafficking among those arrested to the Department of Justice’s Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking once the official turnover of custody is done.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in July announced that Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators, some of which have been used for cryptocurrency and investment scams, would be banned by the end of the year.

Unlicensed ones are already illegal by definition, but licensed POGOs have been given until the end of the year to wrap up their operations.
