Johnson Manabat, ABS-CBN News <div> </div>MANILA - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday clarified that the steel barriers currently encroaching the bike lane on the sidewalk of EDSA-Ortigas Northbound are temporary.The sidewalk below the Ortigas MRT station is notoriously narrow, making it difficult for passengers to pass through. In the previous month, some traffic ushers carrying a &quot;stop and go&quot; sign were seen helping ease the congestion. But it went viral on social media after the sidewalk was apparently expanded by moving the steel barriers by several feet.MMDA General Manager Usec. Procopio &quot;Popoy&quot; Lipana told ABS-CBN News that the agency just granted the request of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to expand the portion of the sidewalk at the foot of MRT Station.&quot;Request ng DOTr yan sa MMDA kasi meron silang ginagawang repair dun sa station ng MRT. So it is temporary pero pinapag-aralan natin kung ito ba ay ipipirmi na natin o ibabalik pa natin,” Lipana said.According to Lipana, there is an ongoing escalator repair at the MRT Station in Ortigas that affects the foot traffic of pedestrian coming from and going to the platform of the MRT.As a result, the MMDA decided to extend the steel barrier separating pedestrians and motorists along EDSA but it occupies half of the bicycle lane.But this solution seems hazardous said Ira Cruz, director of mobility advocacy group Alt Mobility PH.Cruz said the steel barriers poses a hazard not only to bikers but also pedestrians in the area.&quot;This is a potential road safety hazard, may pagkakataon na baka ito’y hindi makita ng mga motorista at masagasaan pa ang mga tao,” Cruz told ABS-CBN News.Lipana asked for understanding, saying that the authorities need to balance the interest of stakeholders.&quot;Dun sa mga bicycle riders na apektado niyan, titingnan natin at babalansehin natin ang interest ng bikers at interest ng pedestrian...at of course ganun din ang ating traffic flow,&quot;Passenger congestion is expected to wind down once the maintenance work on the escalator is done.
