Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) leaders were treated to a close encounter with Australia's iconic animal, the koala, as they arrived to Victorian Government House in Melbourne for the leaders retreat on Wednesday. 

Leaders from the regional bloc greeted Victorian Governor Margaret Gardner and Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese before feeding and petting koalas.

Australia is hosting the three-day summit, which ends on Wednesday, to mark 50 years since it became ASEAN's first external partner.

It will look to bolster ties with the fast-growing region as China aims to increase its diplomatic and military reach.
