MANILA — A top police official whom a motorist who claimed to be his niece after being apprehended along the restricted-access EDSA busway has disavowed any relation to her.

The motorist, caught on video claiming Police Maj. Gen. Mario Reyes was her uncle and also claiming to be a major in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, was flagged down for using the special bus lane on Thursday night.

“I want to make it clear that this person who introduced herself as Major Miguel of the AFP is not a relative by blood nor by affinity. I never met her in any capacity,” Reyes, head of the Philippine National Police Directorate for Logistics, said in a press statement.

“Major Reyes”, who also claimed to be a Filipino American who was arranging the annual Balikatan exercises between Philippine and American troops, refused to give her license to enforcers.

“Any attempt to exploit the name or reputation of a law enforcement officer for personal gain or to avoid accountability is utterly unacceptable and undermines the integrity of our organization,” Reyes said.

Unauthorized use of the EDSA busway — reserved for buses, emergency response vehicles and top government officials — has been in the news in recent weeks with the apprehension of former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson and a driver using an SUV with a protocol plate assigned to Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero.

Reyes said government agencies should issue a show-cause order — which could lead to the suspension or revocation of a driver’s license — and investigate the motorist for a potential charge of usurpation of authority for pretending to be a military officer.

“I am now talking with my lawyers for the filing of appropriate charges against the name-dropper Major Miguel,” he also said.

The AFP has already disavowed “Major Miguel”, saying she is not a member of the military. — Jonathan de Santos, ABS-CBN News
