MANILA — Opposition figures are not looking to campaign with administration candidates in the upcoming 2025 midterm polls despite similar stances on some issues, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno said on Sunday.

“When we speak of issues we can align, walang problema… pero when we speak together of electoral victory, parang hindi puwedeng marriage of convenience lang yan,” he told TeleRadyo Serbisyo.

“Nakita naman natin yung nangyari sa UniTeam na kung magiging marriage of convenience lang yan, saan aabutin yun?” he said.

“Any kind of political alliance like that would require an alignment of our values and policies and programs and also our priorities,” he added.

While the opposition has yet to formally launch their senatorial slate for the 2025 midterm elections, Liberal Party President Edcel Lagman earlier said that the coalition will be fielding less than 6 candidates for senator in the upcoming polls.

While President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) has yet to formally announce its senatorial slate, it has been forging alliances with other political parties such as the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) and the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).

Diokno along with former senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino have been going around the country to touch base with ordinary Filipinos.

“Ang tinututukan ko ay malaman ng tao na hindi lang naman ako human rights defender, na ang aking plataporma ay pasok sa gusto ng lahat na maiangat ang buhay ng lahat,” the human rights lawyer said.

While former Vice President Leni Robredo has declined to run for a national post next year, she remains to be the leader of the opposition, he said.
