Chel Diokno is sworn in as the newest member of the Akbayan Party, September 17, 2024. <em>Handout/Akbayan Party</em></span></span></span></div><p>MANILA — Human Rights Lawyer Jose Manuel &quot;Chel&quot; Diokno has joined the Akbayan Party for his senatorial candidacy in the 2025 midterm elections.</p><p>Diokno took his oath as party member before Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros, who is also Akbayan Chair Emeritus, at her Senate office on Tuesday. </p><p>Former Akbayan Representative and another Akbayan Chair Emeritus Loretta Rosales and Akbayan President Rafaela David were among those who witnessed Diokno&#x27;s formal entry into the party.</p><p>Diokno told media afterwards that joining Akbayan would strengthen the efforts of his alliance with former Senators Francis Pangilinan and Bam Aquino to secure seats in the Senate.</p><p>&quot;For the coming elections sa tingin namin ay mas lalakas ang hanay namin kung may isa isa kaming mga partido. I&#x27;m sure aware naman po tayo na si former Senator Francis Pangilinan is with the Liberal Party, si former Senator Bam Aquino is chair of the KNP (Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino). I think it&#x27;s a good move that I will be part of the Akbayan para may kaniya kaniyang partido,&quot; Diokno said in an interview.</p><p>Diokno also explained why he picked Akbayan.</p><p>&quot;Ano siya, resilient siya, cohesive at may principled politics at yun yung kinahahangaan ko sa Akbayan... I&#x27;m very happy to be a part of the Akbayan family,&quot; Diokno said.</p><p>Diokno previously worked with the party through the Free Legal Assistance Group, which he chairs.</p><p>In a separate press release, Hontiveros noted that Akbayan’s founding 26 years ago was partly inspired by the human rights advocacy of Diokno&#x27;s father, former Senator Jose “Ka Pepe” Diokno.</p><p>“Atty.
