MANILA — After more than 7 decades, an iconic supermarket in Quezon City will close shop on Tuesday, December 31.This was confirmed to ABS-CBN News by Steven Cua, owner of Welcome Supermart near Welcome Rotunda in Quezon City.<div> </div><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1735553892549470885555_1127142839418847_2347747351664500989_n.jpg" style="width:572px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" alt="Photo from Welcome Supermart&#x27;s Facebook page"/>Photo from Welcome Supermart&#x27;s Facebook page“Welcome at QC is closing down for good in 2 days! That&#x27;s a clear indication of how the economy&#x27;s running,” Cua said in a Viber message to ABS-CBN News. </div>In a phone interview, Cua clarified that he was not blaming the administration for this. “Even all good things have to come to an end. Basically, stiff competition, growing formats of retail outlets, unstable/irrational government policies, an uncooperative economy with (unabated) inflation, untenable lease agreement, and unfair tax assessment all add up to our exit plan called retirement of organization,” Cua explained.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/07/26/22/supermarkets-small-businesses-cheer-no-lockdown-vow">Supermarkets, small businesses cheer Marcos vow to avoid lockdowns</a></div>According to Cua, the supermarket is supposed to be turning 77 years in February 2025.<div>HISTORY</div>Cua said his late father Benito Cua Sun Sing started a small business in that part of Welcome Rotunda in 1948. Lilibeth Cablao, one of the supervisors at the supermart, said Cua taught her a lot in terms of managing a business.“Marami po akong natutunan lalong lalo na sa boss namin si sir Steve… Isa pa rin po yun sa mami-miss ko dito, kasi kumbaga hindi lang customer naging turing namin, parang nagiging ano din sila as family,” Cablao said.Some of its regular customers reminisced their fondest memories at the supermart during their childhood.Jerry Huerta, 53, told ABS-CBN News his late mom used to buy their groceries here when he was just a kid.“Medyo reminisce, medyo papa-picture nga sana ako sa labas para at least may parang remembrance dahil bata pa lang ako ito na supermarket namin, eh ngayon magsasara na, last day na bukas,” Huerta said. “Sobrang mura talaga nun, nanay ko kung mamili naka-cart, eh ngayon basket na lang, ala na, sobrang mahal din ng mga bilihin talaga,” Huerta added.Patrick Reyes said his family usually bought their needs at Welcome Supermart since they just live nearby.“Medyo malungkot nga kasi bata pa ako nakakapamili na ako dito eh, medyo nakakalungkot din na magsasarado na,&quot; Reyes recalled. Cablao said they will start the inventory of unsold products starting January 2 until February 2025 as these will be returned to manufacturers and some will be transferred to its remaining branch in Baclaran, Parañaque City.
