MANILA -- The Department of Transportation (DOTr) targets to finish the Metro Manila Subway project by 2032, with a five-year delay due to unforeseen events, said its budget sponsor during the budget deliberation at the House of Representatives.Representative Edgar Erice of the 2nd District of Caloocan asked about the project during the deliberation.“Dahil dito, dahil na-defund ‘yung equity natin, eh ‘yung equity po natin pangbayad sa right of way, relocation, gaano po katagal madedelay from the original target?,” Erice asked.“Hindi po ma-quantify kung gaano katagal ‘yung delay pero napakalaki po ng effect. The original target is 2027, but due to to unforeseen events na may problema sa right of way, 2032 na po ang target,” answered Representative Edwin Ongchuan of the 2nd District of Northern Samar, budget sponsor for the Department of Transportation.On the other hand, Erice emphasized the need to fund motorcycle training and safety after Ongchuan said that requests were underway to support riders and commuters.“Alam po natin na motorcycles comprise the majority of the vehicles on our roads, around 61 percent nationwide, sa kabila nito pito sa sampung road fatalities ay nanggagaling sa motorcycle crashes. Sa datos ng PNP Highway Patrol Group mula sa 24,495 vehicular crashes noong 2023, umakyat po ito ng 31,257 noong 2024,&quot; Erice said.&quot;Given these numbers, ano po ang nakikita ng DOTr, LTO na pinakamabisang hakbang upang gawing mas ligtas ang ating kalsada?,” he asked.“Kailangan talaga nating mapalakas ang motorcycle safety and training dito sa ating bansa. Siguro ay kailangang maikonsidera ng kongreso ang bagay na ito,” he added.Motorcycles have become a dominant mode of transport for millions of Filipinos due to their efficiency, affordability, and accessibility in traffic-congested areas.The construction of the Metro Manila subway began in <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/10/03/22/marcos-signals-start-of-first-ph-subways-construction" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2022</a>.
