MANILA — Construction workers have begun demolition and fencing works at the Metrowalk property in Pasig City to make way for the construction of the Ortigas Station of the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP), the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Wednesday.The move follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to accelerate the long-delayed underground railway project aimed at easing daily commuter congestion in the capital.Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the Ortigas site is a critical component of the 33-kilometer subway, which will run from Valenzuela City to Parañaque, with a spur line to Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.“After nearly three years of delay, sinimulan na natin ang demolisyon at pagbabakod sa property para naman masimulan na rin natin ang pagtatayo ng Ortigas Station ng subway,” the acting transport chief said.The DOTr has acquired 82 percent of the required right-of-way for the MMSP and aims to reach 95 percent by December.The demolition was led by Transportation Assistant Secretary IC Calaguas, joined by former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson and Ako Ilocano Ako Partylist Representative Richelle Singson Michael. The Singson family owns Blemp Commercial of the Philippines Inc., which manages Metrowalk.The Ortigas Station will occupy 12,752 square meters of the eight-hectare property.Once completed in 2032, the subway is expected to cut travel time between Valenzuela and Pasay from 98 minutes to just 45, serving an estimated 519,000 passengers daily.
