MANILA — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Thursday said that it is looking to deploy at least 39 more Dalian trains in 2026 to improve services in the MRT-3, the capital region’s train line with the highest ridership.The DOTr seeks to deploy additional Dalian coaches “towards the entire 2026,” said Engr. Michael Capati, general manager of the MRT-3.“Ang tinatarget namin by end of 2026 or early 2027 ay 20 bagon na 4-car train ang balak namin patakbuhin,” he told state television PTV.“Malaking deperensya ang 4-car train dahil kaya nitong magsakay ng 1,576 na passengers so ibig sabihin mas marami tayong maikakargang pasahero, mas maikli ang paghihintay ng mga pasahero natin,” he said.All Dalian coaches undergo commissioning and testing before they are deployed for public use, the MRT-3 chief said.“Dito po ay tinitiyak natin na lahat ng parte ng dalian ay safe,” he said.“Sinisiguro po natin na lahat ng parte ng tren ay ating tinetest para masiguro natin ang safety ng ating mga mananakay,” he said.The China-made Dalian trains, which were procured in 2014 and delivered in 2017, were tested but not used during the past administration.During his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the Dalian trains have been unused for years but will soon be operational.
