MANILA -- The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said it wants to relocate 178 families to give way to the construction of the Mindanao Railway project. In a statement, the DOTr said it has started right-of-way acquisition so it can build the railway as soon as possible. The DOTr said it has allotted P148 million for the relocation, with an initial batch of 96 families moving into the train village in the first quarter next year. The Tagum-Davao-Digos segment of the Mindanao Railway Project runs for 100 kilometers and will have 8 stations. It will connect the city of Tagum in Davao del Norte, Davao City, and Digos City in Davao del Sur. When completed, it will cut travel time between Tagum and Digos from three hours to just one hour, carrying about 122,000 passengers daily. In June last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said his administration was intensifying efforts to secure funding for the Mindanao Railway Project (MRP) following the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/10/25/23/china-losing-interest-in-funding-ph-infra-projects" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">cancellation</a> of a financial commitment from China.At that time, a senior economic manager said a Chinese senior economic official expressed their concerns regarding &quot;geopolitical factors&quot; as the reason for the lack of progress in the infrastructure projects with Beijing.
