<div> </div>Langen, a town just south of Frankfurt, is the first place in Germany where commuters can use self-driving cars as part of the public transport system.On Monday (May 26), KIRA - a project aimed at integrating autonomous vehicles into the public transit - was opened to public test users in of small parts of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area.Knut Ringat, the managing director of the Rhine-Main metropolitan area&#x27;s transport association RVN, said that he hopes to have KIRA operating as a viable alternative to other forms of public transport by 2030, especially in rural areas.Ringat said that bus services in rural areas were already inadequate and would deteriorate further in the coming years due to an increasing shortage of drivers.&quot;Today, more than 40 percent of our drivers are over 55, which means that in the next ten years, we will lose half of our drivers, so we need an alternative,&quot; Ringat said, adding that the system had to work, otherwise there wouldn&#x27;t be good public transport in ten years.&quot;We have a great responsibility for the rural areas in the region, in the development of equal living spaces and the connection of rural areas to the urban centres,&quot; Ringat said.KIRA works in a similar way to regular ride-sharing apps. You simply put in your pick-up and drop-off points and a car will come to collect you - the only difference being that KIRA will drive itself.According to RMV, KIRA is only available in Langen for now, but if everything goes according to plan, it will be made available to commuters in nearby Darmstadt later in the year.<div>(Production: Timm Reichert, Frank Simon, Johannes Toft Thyssen)</div>
