MANILA — A new station in Talaba, Bacoor will be added to the LRT-1 Cavite Extension, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said Monday that the additional station was requested by the local government unit.

“This was a request by Bacoor and it makes sense because yung Talaba station ay doon sa area kung saan yung new development ng Bacoor City,” he told reporters at the sidelines of the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum in Makati City.

“Hindi ko sinabing malaki na ngayon ang ridership, pero since that is future development in Bacoor then most likely you will have a potential huge ridership,” he added.

The DOTr has sought an additional P3 billion in funding for 2026 to build the new station, which would sit between the Zapote and Niog stations.

Dizon said the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), the private concessionaire responsible for the operations and maintenance of LRT-1, had been informed about this.

“Gobyerno ang gagastos sa istasyon tapos ipapasa natin sa LRMC para patakbuhin… We informed LRMC about this two months ago. Kaya kami sumulat sa kanila kasi kailangan i-harmonize yun (sa existing plan),” said Dizon.

“I was told na hindi siya mahirap gawin kasi dadaan talaga siya e. It’s the same alignment, maglalagay ka lang ng istasyon sa gitna ng Zapote at Niog,” he added.

TWO MORE STATIONS TO OPEN BY 2028

Meanwhile, Dizon expressed confidence that two more train stations of the LRT-1 Cavite extension project could open before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. steps down in 2028.

He is referring to the Las Piñas and Zapote stations which were previously plagued with right of way issues.

“Alam ko wala nang problema sa Las Piñas and sa Zapote. I think okay na yun kaya kampante tayo na matatapos na yun,” he said.

Dizon said the issue with the Department of Public Works and Highways involving the flyover in Las Piñas has also been resolved.

“I think nagawan ng engineering solution so I think ok na yun. Konting pagbabago pero I think they found a way through it,” he said.

Dizon is also optimistic that by 2029 or 2030, the train line will finally be completed until Niog in Bacoor.

“That’s going to be huge for people coming from Cavite who work in Metro Manila,” he said.
