Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</div>Prices of basic goods are seen to go up should domestic oil prices continue to trend upward due to the conflict in the Middle East, an industry group said Tuesday.Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP) said even if fuel price hikes are implemented on a staggered basis, this would still weigh on the operational and logistics costs of manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. “Gumagamit tayo ng gasolina pag nagta-transport ng raw materials papuntang factory, &#x27;yung finished product papuntang warehouse, warehouse papuntang tindahan, so kada gamit ng gasolinang &#x27;yun, nadadagdag siya sa logistics cost,” said SCMAP Marketing and Communications Director Henrik Batallones.“Kung magpapadala ka from Cagayan De Oro to Manila, inter island, may langis din &#x27;yung barko so may corresponding pa rin siyang increase in cost,” he added.<div><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0trmJToRDGg?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> </div>But Batallones noted that the impact may not be immediate, especially as companies also try to maintain competitive pricing.“Mahirap maging &#x27;yung brand na magtataas ka ng presyo tapos &#x27;yung kalaban mo hindi, so hindi siya competitive for a business. Pero kapag nagtuloy-tuloy ito, kailangan na nilang gawin &#x27;yun,” he said.The same goes for independent supermarkets.“Wala pang immediate impact. Ang mga goods namin, last week pa na-deliver or earlier pa… Magtataas lang kami pag nagtaas ang aming suppliers. Pag nagtaas sila, we have no choice,” said Steven Cua, the President of the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association.For the meantime, Cua advised consumers not to panic buy, but to keep abreast of geopolitical developments as well as how these affect the movement of prices.Meanwhile, the SCMAP urged the government to improve the logistics situation in the country to make the Philippines less vulnerable to global disruptions.“The intervention the government can only really do is long-term, which is lower logistics cost through other means: through better infrastructure, better regulations, better policies,” said Batallones.
