MANILA -- The Philippines will need some 10 to 15 years before it can produce oil and gas from reserves near the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), an official from the Department of Energy said on Monday.Since 2024, the DOE has been accepting bid documents for petroleum exploration in the Bangsamoro for 3 pre-determined areas for petroleum exploration in the Catabato and Sulu Basins. “Tuloy-tuloy na po ang pag award ng mga contracts sa mga area na ito at masisimulan na din natin ang matagal nang panahon na hindi natin naeexplore ang areas in Mindanao, especially yung areas na nakaharap sa Malaysia at Indonesia kasi ito yung areas na generally nag proproduce,” said DOE Director Rino Abad.“‘Yun nga lang it takes time, it will take around 5 years. Kung makahanap ka, magdri-drill ka, another 5 years to develop the area and saka ka lang magpro-produce,” he told state television PTV.“So we are looking at 10-15 years bago ka magkaroon ng actual production from exploration, discovery, development,” he said.“Medyo matagal so ang ating option talaga ngayon is discount promo, fuel subsidy program,” he added.Meanwhile, the Bangsamoro government earlier announced that it would also venture into coal exploration, specifically in the area of Kapai and Tagoloan in Lanao Del Sur, covering a total area of 14,856 hectares.
