<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:950px"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/175247381588120250714060756_46c3d54ef06736cc0f5c435c1dd22685ec9832d7962684fb439b6c2d46fcb314.jpg" style="width:950px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/><span class="fr-inner">Malampaya Shallow Water Platform. <em> Handout photo </em></span></span></span></div><div><br/></div><p>MANILA (UPDATE) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said he was optimistic about finding fresh gas reserves in Malampaya as he flew by its new drilling operation on Monday. </p><p>The President flew by the Malampaya Phase 4 Project located offshore of Palawan province.  Video taken onboard drillship Noble Viking showed the Presidential chopper flying overhead, while several members of the crew, bearing the Philippine flag, waved to the President.</p><p>In his speech at the groundbreaking of the Caticlan Passenger Terminal Building in Aklan Monday, President Marcos Jr expressed optimism on finding further gas reserves in the area.</p><p>“We are going to fly by the rig in Malampaya that is now slowly drilling down into the seabed with a reasonable chance of success of finding further reserves,” Marcos said.</p><p>Energy Secretary Sharon Garin, in an earlier interview, said that the almost $900-million drilling project to extend the life of the Malampaya gas field is on track to be completed in 2025.</p><p>Two years ago, the President renewed the Malampaya Service Contract No. 38 (SC 38) that would allow the continued production of the Malampaya gas field for another 15 years or until 2039. </p><p>He said the extension is expected to reduce the Philippines’ dependence on oil imports and ensure a stable supply of energy to the country, as the Malampaya generates 20 percent of Luzon’s energy needs.</p><p>Malampaya is operated by Prime Energy, the power unit of billionaire Enrique Razon&#x27;s Prime Infra. </p><p>Last year, Fitch research unit BMI said Malampaya needs to discover new gas fields as the demand for liquefied natural gas is expected to more than quadruple in the coming years.</p><p>BMI said the Philippines&#x27; energy security depends on Malampaya finding more gas to tap as production from its existing facility is expected to drop from 2.13 billion cubic meters (bcm) in 2024 to 0.94 bcm in 2033.</p><p>Malampaya supplies natural gas to four power plants in Luzon, with a combined capacity of 3,200 megawatts, making up around 20 percent of the power grid&#x27;s supply. </p><p>Prime Infra is also set to hold majority stake in these natural gas plants following a deal with First Gen Corp.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QtR6ql7GB88?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
