MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is studying mounting calls for a total ban on online gambling in the Philippines, Malacanang said Tuesday.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President was carefully weighing the possible economic and social impacts of the move.

The Palace earlier said that Marcos was open to the proposal of the Department of Finance to impose taxes on the online gaming industry.

Sen. Raffy Tulfo on Tuesday joined other lawmakers in calling for a total ban on online gambling, hoping that the President will make known his position on the matter in his next State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28.

Top online gambling operators Solaire Resort, Newport World Resorts, and Okada Manila said in a joint statement on Tuesday that their gambling operations are regulated and are responsibly managed extensions of their casino operations.

The three companies said they “actively promote responsible gaming through tools such as self-exclusion, deposit limits, and account restrictions.” They added that they offer resources for individuals needing assistance with gambling-related concerns.

The firms also asserted that they fully comply with PAGCOR regulations when it comes to licensing and accreditation, anti-money laundering regulations, marketing and advertising policies, data privacy, self-regulation, content review process, and more.

Solaire, Newport, and Okada all said they have invested at least $1 billion each to help the country boost its tourism, and they have allocated 2 percent of the gross gaming revenues for development projects for various foundations.

The Licensed Online Gaming Operators in the Philippines, in an earlier statement, called for stronger regulation instead of a total ban on online gambling.

“Prohibition does not erase online gaming. It only erases the safeguards that protect the Filipino people,” the group said.
