<div> </div>MANILA — Almost 200 new power plants will come online by 2028, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised during this State of the Nation Address, as he vowed to ramp up rural electrification, and fix Siquijor’s power crisis this year.“Sa susunod na tatlong taon, halos dalawandaang planta ang ating tatapusin,” the President said. These new plants can power 4 million homes; 2,000 factories and 7,000 establishments and businesses, Marcos said.He said that at the start of his administration, there were 5 million homes that still had no electricity. In three year, the government was able to electrify 2.5 million homes.The Philippines will also roll out solar power home systems to more than a million households, Marcos said. By setting up a net metering program, households using solar will also be able to sell the excess power they generate to the power grid, he added.Marcos also vowed that the power crisis gripping the island province of Siquijor will not be repeated in other areas“Hindi ko palalampasin ang nangyari kamakailan sa Siquijor,” the President said.An investigation into the causes of the power crisis revealed that the power officials in Siquijor were slow to act, and had no orderly system for buying fuel and spare parts for generators that were clearly not well-maintained, Marcos said.The President also said that the government is working to reduce the cost of power, it is also expanding the lifeline rate, or subsidy program, for poorer consumers.The Philippines has one of the most expensive power rates in Southeast Asia, second only to Singapore.  Despite this, the country also experiences power crises, especially during the &#x27;summer&#x27; months when electricity consumption spikes.
