South Harbor, January 4, 2017. <em>Jonathan Cellona, ABS-CBN News</em></span></span></span> MANILA — US Ambassador to the Philippines Marykay Carlson on Thursday said she believes the US and Philippines will reach a trade agreement soon.</div><p>“I am confident that both sides are working very hard to reach an agreement,” she said on the sidelines of the US Embassy’s Fourth of July celebration.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/7/3/in-us-capital-trump-tariffs-bite-into-restaurant-profits-1044">In US capital, Trump tariffs bite into restaurant profits</a></div><p>The Trump administration’s 90-day pause on hefty new tariff rates for many countries is expected to expire on July 9. </p><p>US President Donald Trump recently told the media he is not planning to make an extension and that each government will be informed accordingly, as the US will “write them a nice letter.”</p><p>For Carlson, who also has experience in trade negotiations, trade is an “evolving issue.” </p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/5/29/us-trade-court-blocks-tariffs-in-major-setback-for-trump-0929">US trade court blocks tariffs in major setback for Trump</a></div><p>In the case of the Philippines and the US, Carlson is optimistic that both will continue to pursue a mutually beneficial trade relationship. </p><p>“You know, if you don&#x27;t have trade disputes and negotiations, you don&#x27;t have trade.
