MANILA — AirAsia MOVE&#x27;s parent firm, Capital A, said on Wednesday that it will be appealing against the P6 million fine imposed by the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) over alleged overpricing.The online travel booking platform came under fire back in June after the Department of Transportation (DOTr) discovered that it was charging P77,000 or two one-way tickets to Tacloban, which is among the areas in Visayas that has been experiencing mobility issues because of the damaged San Juanico bridge.<div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/27/airasia-move-fined-p6-million-for-allegedly-misleading-fares-1051">READ: AirAsia Move fined P6 million for allegedly misleading fares</a></div><div><a class="fr-green fr-strong" href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/5/airasia-move-denies-airfare-manipulation-claims-1834">READ: AirAsia Move denies airfare manipulation claims</a></div>Capital A CEO Tony Fernandes insisted that the fares were not generated by AirAsia MOVE but were provided by third-party suppliers and then processed by an algorithm.“We will take some liability because the fares were on our website but our mitigating circumstances— one, it wasn’t our fare. What happened is the consolidator pushed a fare to us. We can’t check every fare, there are millions of millions of fares out there,” said Fernandes.“We don’t know whether the algorithm and the middleman decided to see that there was a problem between that bridge and whacked the price up. We don’t know, everyone’s denying it… We’ve put something into the system to cap it so it can’t ever happen,” he added.He also noted that no one actually bought those tickets.“If I’m going to charge you a thousand US dollars to fly between here in Cebu, who ... is going to pay that? No one’s going to do it. Let’s have faith in the market,” he said.Moving forward, Fernandes hopes other local airlines will finally agree to work directly with the platform so that they don’t have to get the fares from middlemen anymore, which he believes would prevent incidents like this in the future.“We have been asking airlines to sign up directly with us, as all airlines here have direct relationships with other OTAs (online travel agencies) as well,” he said.Fernandes also questioned how steep their penalty was, saying that other foreign OTAs like Agoda and trip.com were fined lesser amounts for supposedly similar violations.“I’d rather put that P6 million into investing and bringing more people here. If you want me to put P6 million into a fund to invest and promote the Philippines, I’ll do that because that’s proactive and beneficial. We’re here to promote the Philippines, we didn’t overcharge,” he asserted.Meanwhile, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said AirAsia MOVE is free to appeal the CAB’s decision.He also explained why the platform was fined a higher amount than its competitors.“Sa pagkakaalam ko, kaya mas mataas ang AirAsia Move ay mas maraming instances na may lumabas na exhorbitant airline rates kumpara doon sa dalawang napatawan din ng fines. Proportionate lang,” said Dizon.Dizon will also be holding a dialogue with AirAsia and AirAsia MOVE.
