<p>MANILA -- Secretary Frederick Go, Special Assistant to the President on Investment and Economic Affairs, is seeking an exemption from the reported plan of the United States to impose 100 percent tariff on semiconductors.</p><p>At the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines Economic Forum, Go said there is no official announcement yet from the US on the matter and the Philippine government is also clarifying with the US on the reported tariff on semiconductors.</p><p>Previously it was announced that semiconductors will be exempted from the US tariff of 19 percent, but recently the US said there will be tariff on semiconductors for select companies. Go said they are also verifying the veracity of such pronouncements while also continuing to negotiate with the US.</p><p>“We&#x27;re working on trying to get several items exempted. For example an exporting country producing in abundance that cannot be produced in the United States, you can seek exemption for such products,” Go said at the sideline of the forum.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/8/8/ph-semiconductor-industry-asks-gov-t-to-boost-trade-with-other-chip-markets-1803" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PH semiconductor industry asks gov&#x27;t to boost trade with other chip markets</a></div><p>He hopes the US can consider that the Philippines is just part of the long supply chain and that we do not export finished products. He added that the reason it was outsourced in the Philippines in the first place means that there may be limited workers in the US who want to do the job.</p><p>“We&#x27;re hoping that they view the work they do here in the Philippines, which is Assembly, Testing, and Packaging, to be part of the process that the United States may not really want to do… The very reason this was outsourced means this is probably something they are not keen on doing,” he added.</p><div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/8/7/balisacan-downplays-economic-impact-of-trump-s-100-percent-tariff-on-chips-1634" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Balisacan downplays economic impact of Trump&#x27;s 100 percent tariff on chips</a></div><p>Go said that overall the the US tariff is not a bad thing if it is imposed on all countries, and he does not believe that all American companies will leave the Philippines.</p><p>“When there is a tariff imposed on all, then there is almost no tariff. That means everybody is reduced to a level playing field,” he said.</p><p>Department of Economy, Planning, and Development Secretary Arsenio Balisacan has earlier said that the impact on the country of the potential tariff on semiconductors will be not that big as feared by many. He added the country also exports to many other nations, not just the US.</p><p>More than half of exports of the Philippines are in the electronics and semiconductors sector. The US is among the top destinations of the semiconductor and electronics exports of the Philippines.</p><p>The Semiconductor &amp; Electronics Industries in the Philippines Foundation Inc earlier said the government must beef up semiconductor ties with other markets aside from the US to make the industry more resilient.</p><div><span class="fr-video fr-deletable fr-fvc fr-dvb fr-draggable" contenteditable="false" draggable="true"><iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WJSiz9RXOnY?&amp;wmode=opaque&amp;rel=0" frameBorder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe></span><br/></div>
