MANILA — Travelers using the Clark International Airport will be able to ride trains that can take them to Manila and Laguna, the private operator of the airport said on Tuesday.  Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp (LIPAD) said the company will construct an airconditioned walkway connecting the airport to a station of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR).LIPAD President and CEO Noel Manankil said the connector walkway will be 300 meters long, and will have retail shops. He said the company will build the facility at no cost to the government, as they expect the NSCR to increase traffic to the Clark airport.“With the train, I think more than 30 or 40 percent more ang magiging growth pag nandoon na ang tren. Right now we’re experiencing on the average mga 20 percent growth year on year,” he added.The NSCR is a 163-kilometer railway planned to connect Clark in Pampanga to Tutuban in Manila, all the way to Calamba, Laguna. The Northern leg, or the Valenzuela to Clark segment of the NSCR, was originally expected to begin operations in 2026, but this has been pushed back to 2028 as builders contend with right-of-way issues.Meanwhile, Manankil said Clark International Airport is reverting to its original passenger target of 3 million passengers this 2025. This is lower than the 3.4 million target it set early this year following the order of the Manila Slot Coordination Committee to not allow turboprop flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.Manankil said Clark lowered its target because the transfer of turboprop flights out of NAIA has yet to be fully implemented.“The turboprop, we were expecting 100 percent transfer by October, but the recent development is, I think, Manila will still be keeping, from the information shared with us, a total of 6 flights a day,” he said.The order of the committee was to ban all turboprop flights at NAIA by October, but that has been extended to March next year. So far, Sunlight Air has fully moved to Clark, many Cebu Pacific’s CebGo flights have already transferred, while Philippine Airlines&#x27; PAL Express will soon be adding more turboprop flights at Clark.Manankil said that the 3 million target is still higher than the 2024 passenger count due to expected new routes and flights this year.“We expect the flights and passengers to start by October. We are still targeting total passenger of about 3 million this year, which is more than 20 percent growth from our 2024 number which is 2.4 million,” he said.Teri Flores, LIPAD Head of Corporate Communications said aside from new flights, they also depend on the existing flights which have seen big load factor or passenger count.“Marami tayo connectivity to the US, so very popular siya sa mga balikbayan na manggagaling sa Amerika. And then of course, we have our stable long-haul flights coming from Qatar and Emirates,” Flores said.
