MANILA -- GCash users can now tap their phones to make payments internationally.In a statement, the fintech giant said GCash&#x27;s Tap to Pay feature can now be used to pay at more than 150 million places worldwide where Mastercard is accepted. This feature is available to users with NFC-enabled phones. NFC, or near field communication, allows devices to exchange data wirelessly over very short distances. This is done by touching the devices together or holding them within a few centimeters of each other. NFC is used in mobile payment systems, like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Most flagship phones and some midrange phones have the NFC feature.GCash first launched the Tap to Pay feature in <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/6/4/gcash-taps-nfc-payments-with-mastercard-open-fabric-1547" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">June</a>. The e-wallet firm said users can now make payments using their phones globally because of a collaboration between Alipay+ and Mastercard.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/4/22/gcash-partners-with-mastercard-to-allow-tap-to-pay-for-customers-1316" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">GCash partners with Mastercard to allow tap-to-pay for customers</a></div>This also complements their <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/business/2024/10/14/gcash-says-scan-to-pay-feature-now-available-in-more-countries-2111" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">scan-to-pay feature</a>, which is available in more than 50 destinations worldwide.These features, GCash said, mean Filipinos traveling abroad no longer have to carry so much foreign currency or multiple bank cards with them.&quot;With Tap to Pay, we&#x27;re not just modernizing payments; we&#x27;re empowering Filipinos with a seamless and globally competitive solution that is locally relevant and universally accessible,&quot; said Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of GCash mobile wallet operator G-Xchange Inc.In the Philippines, the GCash Tap to Pay feature was recently made available in the <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2025/7/25/dotr-launches-cashless-payments-for-mrt-3-0955" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">MRT Line 3</a>.GCash, the largest fintech in the Philippines, is possibly seen to surpass its parent firm Globe in terms of company valuation in the near future. GCash is now valued at $5 billion, while Globe is around $6 billion.Globe has said it is eyeing an initial public offering for GCash, but this will on market conditions.
