(SEIPI) issued this call as United States President Donald Trump threatens 100 percent tariffs on foreign-made chips to shore up production in the United States.</p><p>Stakeholders view the potential higher levies as devastating not only for the industry but also for the economy in the long run.</p><p>SEIPI said diversifying the markets and leveraging on close Philippine-US ties may help cushion the blow of the trade curb on the country.</p><p>&quot;Can you imagine if these major US multinationals set up shop in the United States and get away from these tariffs? So it will just crush our economy, our semiconductors electronics industry,&quot; SEIPI president Dan Lachica said.</p><p>&quot;We need to develop markets outside the United States and move up the value chain in terms of not just producing hardware semiconductor electronics but moving into integrated circuit design and other high-value activities,&quot; he said.</p>
