<p>MANILA — The Philippines&#x27; unemployment and underemployment rates climbed in July from June as typhoons and floods affected large parts of the country.</p><p>The Philippine Statistics Authority said the jobless rate climbed to 5.3 percent in July from 3.7 percent in June as four strong storms hit the country, disrupting agriculture. This meant that 2.59 million Filipino workers were jobless that month.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757472732280jobless rate.jpg" style="width:600px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p>National Statistician and PSA Undersecretary Claire Denis Mapa said the underemployment rate also climbed to 14.8 percent in July from  11.4 percent in June. This was equivalent to 6.8 million Filipino workers who saw their jobs as inadequate and were looking for extra jobs or extra work hours.</p><p>The sectors and industries that shed the largest number of jobs year-on-year were agriculture and forestry, wholesale and retail trade, fishing and aquaculture, and construction. Mapa said these were also the sectors that were most affected by the weather.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757472753738underemployment rate.jpg" style="width:600px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/></div><p> &quot;Tinamaan ang ating bansa, yung maraming areas, ng typhoons. Ito talaga yung nakita naming na main reason na kung bakit, una, bumaba yung ating labor force participation, saka yung employment na rin,&quot; Mapa said.  </p><p>(The country was hit by typhoons. This is the main reason why the labor force participation rate went down, along with the employment rate.)</p><p>The PSA also noted the lower labor force participation rate, as many stopped looking for jobs because of the weather situation, with many young workers opting to go back to school.</p><div><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/1757472772058sectors.jpg" style="width:600px" class="fr-fic fr-dib"/> </div><p>But Mapa also noted that the rice farming industry has been losing workers since January.</p><p>&quot;So siguro mga impact ito siguro ng weather and then nagsasabi na mababa ang presyo ng farmgate price sa palay,&quot; Mapa said.</p><p>(This may be because of the weather, and then some say it&#x27;s also because of the low farmgate price of rice.)</p><p>Meanwhile, the PSA also noted a yearly increase in the number of jobs in the manufacturing sector.</p><p>Mapa also said that the number of salaried workers increased by 1.24 million in July compared to the same month year. The PSA chief said this was significant as 987,000 of these salaried workers were absorbed by the private sector.</p><p>&quot;So ito yung isa na maganda na nakita natin,&quot; he said.</p><p>Mapa also said he expects the employment situation to improve with the onset of the &quot;ber&quot; months, as businesses usually ramp up their hiring towards the Christmas season, when consumption also increases. </p><div><br/></div><div><br/></div><div><br/></div>
