MANILA – Establishing customer trust and identity remains a critical hurdle to advancing financial inclusion in the Philippines, Pavel Schamberger, Head of Data and Business Development at fintech firm Skyro, said at the Manila Tech Summit 2025.“One of the key challenges in lending is establishing trust and identity. The fragmented ecosystem of national and local IDs complicates the verification process. In addition, many individuals remain largely part of the offline, cash-based economy, with little to no digital footprint, making their onboarding particularly difficult,” Schamberger told a panel on AI-powered finance.The summit, held at Shangri-La The Fort and now in its fifth year, drew hundreds of participants under the theme “Forging a New Global Order: Risks and Opportunities Redefined.” Discussions focused on emerging fintech strategies, investments, and regulatory challenges.Despite millions of Filipinos registering for the National ID,  a large part of these registrants are still awaiting physical cards, while millions lack basic identification, Skyro noted. Schamberger said this poses challenges for fast and secure onboarding, even as Skyro accepts other valid IDs.Skyro said this makes identity verification not just a step in compliance, but the foundation of customer trust and the gateway that allows more Filipinos to access loans quickly, securely, and fairly.Schamberger noted progress in data availability. “The country has seen tremendous progress, with major data sources now readily available,” he said.
