MANILA -- Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Charlito Mendoza said the agency likely missed the P3.2 trillion tax collection target for 2025, but he is eyeing hitting the P3.5 trillion collection for 2026.Mendoza said they are still finalizing the December data, but it is likely that this did not meet the government&#x27;s full-year target last year. He added that although initial numbers for December were high, these didn’t push tax collection above the 2025 target.“We will collect around P3.1 billion. So as of yesterday, net of refund na yun. We already have collected P3 trillion and P100 billion. Natutuwa ako i-share sa inyo as of December naka-rebound tayo significantly. As of yesterday, nasa 7.5 percent na growth natin for December,” he said.Mendoza explained that the agency has been beefing up tax collection initiatives. It hit its targets in the first few months of 2025, but because of the flood-control controversy, tax collection slowed down due to lower government spending.“Beginning July to November, growth rate bumaba significantly to 3.1 percent,” he said.Despite not hitting the target, the P3.1 trillion collection for 2025 is the highest posted in two decades.For 2026, Mendoza said the tax collection target is possibly around P3.5 trillion, but he is still waiting for the announcement from the Development Budget Coordination Committee.“For now, we are setting our goal on that na P3.58 trillion and that will be around 15.5 percent increase from our collection,” he added.Mendoza said he is still confident of hitting the much higher target in 2026 as they beef up tax collection this year.
