MANILA — Philippine digital wallet giant GCash has issued an urgent warning to its users over sophisticated new scamming techniques involving fake government representatives and fraudulent mobile applications.The fintech firm said fraudsters are increasingly posing as officials from the national ID system (PhilSys) or the eGovPH platform to pressure victims into compromising their accounts.&quot;Scammers are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics, including phone calls, emails, fake apps, and staged online video meetings, to pressure victims into revealing their account credentials, resulting in unauthorized access and financial loss,&quot; GCash said in a statement.Under one identified scheme, criminals contact individuals claiming their National ID is ready for verification and request they join a Google Meet call. Victims are then instructed to download a fake app and share their screen.&quot;By watching your screen, they will steal your OTPs, PINs, and passwords, then access your banking and e-wallet accounts,&quot; the Ayala-led fintech warned.The firm also flagged &quot;too good to be true&quot; offers, such as fake promotions or expiring rewards, where scammers create a sense of urgency to trick users into providing One-Time Passwords (OTPs).To combat the surge in digital theft, GCash advised the public to ignore unexpected calls regarding account verification and to never share sensitive credentials or screens during transactions.&quot;Do not download apps from links sent by email or text: use the official Apple App Store, Google Play, or Huawei AppGallery,&quot; the company added.The warning comes as Philippine authorities ramp up efforts to curb cybercrime. GCash said it is working closely with the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to track and block suspicious accounts.
