MANILA – The Philippine peso depreciated to a new low on Friday.The peso fell to P59.735 versus the US dollar at the close of Friday’s trading, the second time in a week that it weakened to a new historic low. Last Monday, the peso closed at P59.50 to the dollar, which was already the weakest level it has ever reached. On Friday, the peso opened even weaker at P59.55, and even fell to P59.75 during intraday trading. A weaker peso complicates the country’s energy situation as it makes prices of oil imports even more expensive at a time that global oil prices are skyrocketing due to the conflict in the Middle East. The peso’s depreciation also adds to the country’s debt burden as it makes dollar-denominated debts more expensive.Families of OFWs however can expect to exchange more pesos for every dollar remitted by their loved ones abroad.
