<div><span class="fr-img-caption fr-fic fr-dib" style="width:960px;display:block" width="960"><span class="fr-img-wrap"><img src="https://od2-image-api.abs-cbn.com/prod/editorImage/177339095870520240111-water-collection-manila-MD9925.jpg" style="width:960px" class="fr-fic fr-dib" width="960"/><span class="fr-inner" style="text-align:left">A resident uses water from a faucet for laundry in Manila on January 11, 2024. <em>Mark Demayo, ABS-CBN News/File</em></span></span></span></div><p> MANILA - Consumers must brace for spike in water rate starting next month after the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System on Friday approved the implementation of the Foreign Currency Differential Adjustment (FCDA) for the second quarter of 2026 for both Manila Water Company Inc and Maynilad Water Services Inc.</p><p>According to the MWSS, the FCDA is a tariff mechanism that allows concessionaires to recover losses or give back gains from fluctuations in foreign exchange rate, from foreign-denominated loans by concessionaires.</p><p>The MWSS said for Maynilad, it has approved an upward tariff adjustment by an average of P0.09 per cubic meter. For Manila Water, the tariff shall be adjusted upward by an average of P0.04 per cubic meter, the regulator said.</p><p>Maynilad&#x27;s adjustment translates to an increase in the water bill starting April of P0.27, P1 and P2.07 for consumption of 10 cubic meters or less, 20 cubic meters and 30 cubic meters, respectively.</p><p>For Manila Water, the increase in translates to P0.14, P0.29 and P0.58 for consumption of 10 cubic meters or less, 20 cubic meters and 30 cubic meters, respectively.</p><p>Meanwhile, the MWSS also urged eligible consumers to apply for the enhanced lifeline program for low-income and low-consuming households, including members of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program of 4Ps consuming up to 20 cubic meters per month.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MAYNILAD FINED</strong></div><p>The MWSS has imposed over P42 million penalty on Maynilad Water Services Inc for failure to meet service obligation in a portion of its concession area in February.</p><p>A total penalty of P42,569,790.85 was imposed, MWSS said, after investigations showed that the concessionaire failed to meet its service obligation of providing uninterrupted twenty-four supply of water at a minimum pressure of 7 pounds per square inch to 98,331 customers within the Putatan Water Treatment Plant and Poblacion Water Treatment Plant supply zones.</p><p>The penalty will be implemented in the form of bill rebates equivalent to P432.92 per affected water service connection, which shall be reflected in customers&#x27; water bills by April 2026, the regulator said.</p><p>Details of the nature, scope and procedure of the rebate program will be discussed during a public information drive on March 27, the MWSS said.</p><p>&quot;In addition, the MWSS RO has directed Maynilad to fast-track the implementation of its proposed solutions to address service interruptions affecting its customers in the south of Metro Manila, and to ensure the continuity and reliability of water supply within its Service Area,&quot; it said. </p><p>&quot;The MWSS RO remains steadfast in protecting consumer welfare, especially the most vulnerable, and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that water and wastewater services are always available, accessible, affordable, and equitable for all,&quot; it added.</p><div><br/></div><div><strong>MAYNILAD SAYS TO COMPLY WITH MWSS DECISION</strong></div><p>In a statement Friday, Maynilad said it will comply with the decision of the MWSS to impose a penalty.</p><p>It explained that the interruptions were &quot;associated with weather-driven changes in raw water conditions in Laguna Lake.&quot;</p><p>The changes, Maynilad said, &quot;required operational adjustments in our treatment facilities, including reductions in plant production levels to ensure that treated water continued to comply with the Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water.&quot;</p><p>Thus, the conditions resulted in reduced treatment plant output in February, it said.</p><p>&quot;We continue to implement operational improvements and infrastructure upgrades to strengthen the reliability of water supply in the southern portion of our concession area, particularly during periods when weather conditions affect raw water intake from Laguna Lake,&quot; Maynilad said.</p>
