MANILA -- Philippine property giant Robinsons Land Corporation (RLC) has signed a renewable energy deal with First Gen Group to power its shopping malls across the Visayas and Mindanao regions with geothermal energy, the companies announced.Under the agreement signed on March 13, First Gen will supply over 22 megawatts (MW) of geothermal power to eight malls and a supermarket across five provinces. The move is part of a broader sustainability push by the Gokongwei Group, RLC’s parent company, to decarbonize its operations and hedge against volatile global fuel prices.The clean energy will be sourced from the Unified Leyte geothermal facilities for malls in the Visayas and the Mt. Apo geothermal plant in North Cotabato for Mindanao operations.“Consistent with the Net Zero goal of the Gokongwei Group by 2050, we at Robinsons Land are committed to keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible and ensuring sustainability through strong environmental performance and energy efficiency,” said Mybelle V. Aragon-GoBio, president and CEO of RLC.She added that the partnership allows RLC to power its malls with renewable energy even during peak demand, reducing exposure to &quot;electricity price volatility driven by global fuel markets, which is particularly important amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.&quot;RLC, which operates 57 malls nationwide, currently sources 10 to 15 percent of its total power from renewables, including 30 MW of rooftop solar capacity.First Gen, one of the country’s leading renewable producers with 1,700 MW of clean energy capacity, hailed the return of the partnership.“Geothermal energy is not just renewable, it’s also indigenous and the only clean energy source that can run baseload capacity,” said First Gen President Giles Puno. “It offers not just electricity cost optimization, but also price predictability.”The deal includes assets held by RLC’s subsidiary, RL Commercial REIT (RCR), and affiliate Robinsons Supermarket Corporation.
