<div> </div>MANILA – A regional trial court (RTC) has convicted a revenue officer from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Zamboanga City for multiple counts of money laundering amounting to more than half a million pesos, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said. In a release, DOJ said it was able to secure the conviction of Flora Sarau Albao, a BIR revenue officer in Zamboanga City. This supposedly stemmed from the charges of direct bribery, robbery with intimidation, and violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. In May 2022, the agency said Albao was a subject of the National Bureau of Investigation’s (NBI) entrapment operation for an alleged P500,000 extortion from an individual, prompting an investigation with the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC).“AMLC investigations revealed Albao maintained 36 bank accounts across four banking institutions,” the statement read. “As a Revenue Officer IV with an equivalent pay of Salary Grade 19, Albao’s monthly income was P49,835 per month with an annual income equivalent to P598,020, yet she deposited an average of P93,000 from May to August 2022 which is more than double her salary during that period,” it added.The RTC convicted the accused with multiple counts of money laundering, with a penalty of imprisonment from 7 to 13 years for the first 6 money laundering cases, with a P3 million fine for each count. Albao was also sentenced to 4 to 6 years of imprisonment for the other 6 money laundering cases, with a P1.5 million fine for each count.
