MANILA – UnionBank of the Philippines saw its net income skyrocket by 167 percent year-on-year to P3.8 billion in the first quarter of 2026, the lender announced Monday.The sharp rise in profitability came despite the bank weathering trading losses triggered by market volatility linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran, the Aboitiz-led bank disclosed to the stock exchange.On a quarter-on-quarter basis, net income grew by 8.7 percent, signaling a shift toward what the bank described as a &quot;sustainable path&quot; driven by recurring core income.Net revenues for the period reached P21.7 billion, up 11.8 percent from the previous year. The bank’s customer base also expanded to 18.9 million, providing a massive foundation for its aggressive digital and lending strategies.&quot;We are carrying over strong momentum, building on the actions we took in 2025 to strengthen our balance sheet and lay the foundation for sustainable growth,&quot; said Chief Financial Officer Manuel Lozano.While the figures show a robust recovery, Lozano remained cautious about the external environment.“Recent geopolitical developments introduced potential risks,&quot; Lozano said. &quot;Our immediate focus is to ensure we effectively navigate the impact of recent developments. We are strongly positioned in terms of capital and liquidity, and we remain focused on protecting earnings.&quot;
