MANILA — The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has ordered the resumption of operations of the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM).The WESM is the hub for trading electricity in the Philippines. All energy transactions, like the demand and supply of electricity, are scheduled through the market. This means commercial and market forces govern electricity prices.The ERC suspended the WESM on <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/3/26/erc-suspends-electricity-spot-market-operations-1217" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">March 26</a> after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared a state of <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/20/marcos-urged-to-revise-energy-emergency-declaration-amid-iran-war-uncertainty-1456">national energy emergency</a>, saying that the ongoing unrest in the Middle East has posed an &quot;imminent danger… upon the availability and stability of the country&#x27;s energy supply.&quot;But the ERC on Friday said resuming normal WESM operations is &quot;the most suitable course of action&quot; now.&quot;This will allow electricity prices to more accurately mirror current market conditions while maintaining consumer protection safeguards,” said ERC chairperson Francis Saturnino Juan.While WESM operations were suspended, the government implemented a modified administered pricing mechanism.“We observed that although the temporary pricing mechanism was effective in addressing the emergency, prolonging its use could lead to unintended charges in market settlements,” Juan said.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/10/meralco-rates-climb-in-april-1034https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/10/meralco-rates-climb-in-april-1034" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Meralco rates climb in April</a><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/30/what-charges-make-up-your-meralco-bill-1651" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"></a> <a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/30/what-charges-make-up-your-meralco-bill-1651" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">What charges make up your Meralco bill?</a></div>
