US to fund feasibility study for Sangley airport development

MANILA – The United States on Tuesday announced funding for a feasibility study to develop Sangley airport into the Philippines new international gateway.The US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded the grant to local developer Cavitex Holdings Inc. for the proposed Sangley Point International Airport. The project is designed to provide an alternative to Manila’s aging Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which handled a staggering 52 million passengers in 2025.&quot;The high volume of direct international travel between the United States and the Philippines reflects the steadfast friendship of our two countries,&quot; said Thomas R. Hardy, USTDA’s Deputy Director, adding that the project supports a &quot;free and open Indo-Pacific.&quot;The study, to be conducted by California-based The S-A-P Group, will focus on air traffic forecasts and the implementation of advanced security screening for anticipated direct flights to US aviation hubs. It also aims to integrate American technology in construction and telecommunications.The initiative falls under the Luzon Economic Corridor, a strategic effort to boost connectivity in the Philippines&#x27; most populous island.Leonides J.M. Virata, President and CEO of Cavitex, said the assistance would &quot;advance project planning and implementation by enabling access to advanced US expertise.&quot;&quot;The SPIA initiative will deliver transformative benefits for the country – creating tens of thousands of jobs, enhancing mobility, and unlocking billions in long-term economic activity,&quot; Virata added.
