Visayas power grid on Yellow Alert again despite Eid al-Adha holiday

MANILA — The National Grid Corp of the Philippines has put the Visayas power grid on Yellow Alert again on Wednesday.For the third consecutive day of a third straight week, the NGCP said the power reserves in the Visayas grid are not enough to guarantee uninterrupted service throughout the day.The Yellow Alert will be in effect from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today. This was despite Wednesday being declared a national holiday, which means most private and public offices were closed.Visayas currently has a power supply of 2,682 megawatts, while peak demand is seen at 2,415MW, the NGCP said.A Yellow Alert is raised when the power generation capacity is not enough to meet the contingency needs of the power grid, which means that power outages may be implemented in some areas to keep the grid stable.As of today, the NGCP said 14 power plants are on forced outage since the start of the month, while several others have been on forced outage since 2023, and others are not running on full capacity.Visayas was first placed on Yellow Alert on May 12, and the advisory has been issued regularly almost every day since then.The Philippines often experiences power outages during the hot and humid months of April and May, when power consumption rises because of sustained use of cooling devices like electric fans and air conditioning units.
