MANILA — Japan may consider the Philippines as “one of the more important artificial intelligence (AI) technological hubs” as Manila and Tokyo forge closer ties during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s 4-day state visit this week, an analyst said on Thursday.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/5/28/deals-on-intelligent-cities-smart-life-systems-signed-during-marcos-state-visit-1234" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Deals on intelligent cities, &#x27;smart life&#x27; systems signed during Marcos state visit</a></div>Marcos traveled to Japan on May 26 to discuss energy, security, maritime, and defense cooperation deals with Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae. He also met with Emperor Naruhito, the Japanese Diet, and business sector leaders as the Philippines and Japan mark the 70th anniversary of their bilateral relations this year. “Mahalaga ito sa pagpapatibay ng government-to-government relations ng countries, kaakibat nito yung economic imperatives na maari nating makuha, lalo na the Philippines is being looked at in the region as one of the more important AI technological hubs,” said political analyst Froilan Calilung.“Itong mga market intervention mechanisms na ito will be helpful in trying to build a robust economy,” he said.“This will really pump prime the economy and try to infuse the much-needed stimulus or impetus for growth in mobility and the economy,” he added.The Philippines’ closer ties with Japan signal that the country is ready to take on more foreign investments, the analyst said.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/5/28/japanese-businesses-commit-3-4-b-investment-during-marcos-roundtable-0825" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Japanese businesses commit $3.4-B worth of investment in PH during Marcos roundtable</a></div>“Kinakailangan natin na mayroon tayong mga sasandigan na bansa maliban sa Estados Unidos,” Calilung said.“Japan is really one of those countries who really want to foster peace and collaborative initiatives sa West Philippine Sea… lalo na may kinakaharap pa rin tayong tensyon sa West Philippine Sea,” he said.“When we open globalization and integration ties with a country like Japan, it also sends a strong signal to other country who may also be wanting to have investment schemes as well,” he said.Marcos has been pushing to upgrade the Philippines’ manufacturing industry in the value chain as the country continues to supply semiconductors and other raw materials being used in technologies being assembled in other countries.In 2025, Marcos told investors in South Korea that the Philippines will be an AI-powered country in the next few years.
