MANILA—The Department of Energy (DOE) on Wednesday said power services in Mindanao are expected to normalize within the week following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the region, as power facilities continue to be restored.DOE Secretary Sharon Garin said the number of households affected by the power outage in Mindanao has dropped from around 840,000 to just 130. &quot;Affected &#x27;yung mga 800 megawatts sa Mindanao dahil sa lindol, so now pakonti-konti naayos na siya. Mga 400, 500 na lang ang kulang,&quot; Garin said.&quot;Pakonti-konti na-no-normalize na &#x27;yung Mindanao. We are asking for patience lang within a week, magno-normalize na,&quot; she said. The energy chief said six distribution utilities sustained damage due to earthquake, although most have already been repaired but the major concern is the utility serving Sarangani and General Santos City.She also assured that 23 out of 24 hospitals in the affected areas have already regained power.&quot;Except in Glan, kasi putol ang bridge kaya mahirap i-cross ng volunteers,&quot; she said.Meanwhile, Garin said the power supply outlook for Luzon and Mindanao remains stable, but the situation in the Visayas remains a concern. The DOE placed the Visayas Grid under red alert on Wednesday afternoon until 7:00pm Garin said this is due to several factors, including high electricity demand brought about by hot weather, limitations in transmission capacity, and dependence on imported power from Luzon and Mindanao.&quot;Dependent kasi &#x27;yung Visayas sa import galing Mindanao tsaka Luzon eh. So pag tumaas &#x27;yung konsumo sa Luzon at Mindanao, di na sila makakabigay sa Visayas at makukulangan na,&quot; she said. Garin added that they are looking for an additional 150 to 200 megawatts of power supply for Visayas.&quot;Immediate plan is to bring in more power. Like, meron kaming mga nahanap na mga barges, parang barko na may dalang power plant na rin. Meron kaming mga batteries, or baka meron pang mga power plants na di pa pinapaandar, so we are scouting around Visayas and we are looking for power plants within Visayas,&quot; she said.Meanwhile, at the MAP General Membership Meeting, Garin discussed the Philippine energy situation, saying the sector remains structurally vulnerable due to its reliance on imported energy. One, we have identified more EVs, for example, para electrification of our transport system so dapat may programs kami to push for that,&quot; she said. Garin also mentioned that a pre-bid conference is scheduled in June, as the Semirara coal contract is set to expire in 2027.She added that changes and adjustments are still being finalized.&quot;Right now, we are scheduled to have a pre-bid conference. Hopefully, within the month and we&#x27;ll see who are interested,&quot; she said.
