MANILA — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) offered some 4,000 overseas job vacancies during an Independence Day job fair on Friday.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/nation/2026/6/7/dmw-launches-first-ofw-global-summit-vows-stronger-support-for-migrant-workers-1747" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DMW launches first OFW Global Summit, vows stronger support and long-term protection for migrant workers</a></div>This, while assuring aspiring overseas Filipino workers that deployment to Hungary remains open for those already with work visas and employment contracts, pending clarification of a new policy affecting future foreign workers.The job fair, held as part of the Philippines&#x27; 128th Independence Day celebration, featured 13 licensed recruitment agencies, with 10 land-based and three sea-based, offering professional and skilled positions across various industries.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/4/30/dole-offers-190-000-jobs-in-labor-day-fairs-amid-middle-east-crisis-1549" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">DOLE offers 190,000 jobs in Labor Day fairs amid Middle East crisis</a></div>DMW Undersecretary Bernard Olalia said the agency and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are seeking clarification from Hungarian authorities following reports that the country may tighten rules governing foreign workers.&quot;Una, kinikilala natin yung karapatan ng bawat bansa na maglabas ng national legislation at national policy nila,&quot; Olalia said. &quot;Ang importante dito, pag tungkol po sa Hungary, nakikipagtulungan po ang DMW at DFA na makipag-usap sa ating counterpart.&quot;Olalia noted that when Hungary previously announced similar measures, Filipino workers were exempted from the restrictions.&quot;Dahil kung naalala niyo, nakaraang naglabas sila ng ganito ay exempted po ang Pilipinas. Isa po ang mga OFWs natin ay hindi sakop ng batas na ito,&quot; he said.For now, workers with valid visas and Overseas Employment Certificates (OECs) may continue to leave for Hungary.“Hangga’t na-issue ng OEC at may appropriate visa, OK,&quot; Olalia said.The DMW official expressed confidence that Filipino workers would continue to be welcomed overseas.&quot;Tayo po ay naniniwala na the Filipino worker is still the most preferred foreign worker abroad,&quot; he said.<div> </div><div>Hundreds flock to job fair</div>The job fair drew hundreds of aspiring and returning overseas workers, many of whom are looking to Europe for better-paying opportunities.Patricia Del Rosario, a radiologic technology undergraduate applying for a hotel receptionist position in Croatia, said salaries abroad remain a major consideration.&quot;Actually po, may work po talaga ako dito pero yung salary wise na rin po hindi po talaga sapat yung salary dito sa Pilipinas compared po dun sa abroad,&quot; she said.The eldest among her siblings, Del Rosario said she hopes to help support her family through overseas employment.&quot;For the family, makatulong din po sa mga kapatid ko po and sila na lang po yung makapagtapos siguro,&quot; she said.Amy Basoy, who worked as a domestic helper in Singapore from 2006 to 2008, is hoping to return overseas, this time to Europe, as a massage therapist after completing several skills training courses.&quot;Kasi may job opportunities sa Europe, so try lang, baka sakali,&quot; she said.She said working abroad would help her save for retirement while making use of skills she developed over the years.Recruitment agencies participating in the fair said Europe has become the preferred destination among many applicants.&quot;Majority talaga Europe,&quot; said Glen Pollarca of licensed recruitment agency EDI Staffbuilders.According to Pollarca, factory and warehouse workers in countries such as the Czech Republic and Slovakia can earn between P50,000 and P70,000 monthly, which is triple the salaries available in similar jobs locally.Most applicants, he said, are seeking positions in factories, warehouses, hospitality and caregiving.The DMW also used the event to warn jobseekers against illegal recruiters and online scams, particularly as new labor markets continue to open abroad.&quot;Pagka meron tayong mga bagong binubuksan na mga merkado, nandiyan po sumasabay palagi ang illegal recruiters,&quot; Olalia said.He reminded workers that legitimate overseas deployment must pass through the DMW and cautioned applicants against recruiters offering tourist visas, unusually fast processing, or demanding excessive fees.&quot;At dahil rehistrado po ang job orders at lisensyado ang mga naririto ngayon, sigurado yung kanilang mga application at sila po ay makukuha bilang isang documented and regular OFW under a safe and regular migration,&quot; he said.
