They are also family reunions, political summits, networking opportunities, and occasionally free buffets disguised as sacred ceremonies.So how do you decide who actually deserves a seat at your wedding without offending your nearest and dearest? Here are seven ways to survive the process with your sanity — and relationships — mostly intact.<div>#1 Start with asking: “Would I buy this person P3,000 worth of salmon?”</div>One of the simplest ways to decide if someone belongs on your guest list is to remember how expensive weddings are. Every guest is not just “one more chair.” That chair comes with food, drinks, souvenirs, cake, flowers, and more.So when reviewing names, ask yourself honestly: *Would I willingly spend several thousand pesos feeding this person?*We sometimes confuse politeness with closeness. But weddings are expensive enough without adding people whose names you barely remember.<div>#2 Intimate Wedding or Town Fiesta feels?</div>Every couple says the same thing at the beginning: “Simple lang kami.”Three months later, they are booking a ballroom for 400 people and negotiating whether second cousins from Canada should get hotel accommodations.There is nothing wrong with a big wedding. Weddings are joyful, loud, emotional, and wonderfully excessive. But problems begin when you start off wanting intimacy then inviting every person you have encountered since Grade 3.Here’s a useful rule: if you cannot make your way around the room during dinner because there are too many tables, you may have accidentally organized a town fiesta instead of a wedding.<div>#3 Facebook memories do not count as friendship</div>One dangerous thing about social media is it creates the illusion that we are still close to people we no longer actually know.You see their vacation photos. They react to your engagement post. They occasionally send fire emojis to your stories. Suddenly you feel obligated to invite them.But liking your engagement photo is not the same as being part of your real life. Weddings should be filled with people who actively matter in your present life — not people who merely survived in your algorithm.<div>#4 Choose joy over fear</div>Many guest list decisions come from a place of fear. Fear that relatives will gossip. Fear that coworkers will feel insulted. Fear that someone will say, “Ay, hindi tayo invited?”But let’s face it: people will gossip no matter what.If you invite too many people, they will say your wedding is excessive. If you keep it small, they will say you became “mayabang.” If the food is lavish, they will say you overspent. Between traffic, outfit expenses, and giving cash gifts, attending can be a huge financial commitment nowadays.<div>#6 Parents’ requests also add up</div>It’s natural for parents to want to be involved in your wedding planning.  But you need to set boundaries when it comes to requests for invitations.Fathers may add “important family friends.”  Mothers would recommend old connections.  Even your aunts and uncles and siblings and cousins may put in names from their circles.A practical compromise is to assign a fixed number of guest slots per family group. So the families of the bride and the groom feel equally important.  It also protects your budget from spiraling into catastrophe.<div>#7 Consider “No Ring, No Bring” rule </div>One wedding rule that went viral online recently,  rumored to be associated with Taylor Swift’s wedding planning — is the “No Ring, No Bring” policy.Translation: if a guest is not married or engaged, they do not automatically receive a plus one.  This may sound brutal but remember that every plus one is another full-paying guest. And sometimes these “plus ones” are random people the bride and groom have never met.Nobody wants to look through wedding photos years later and wonder, “Sino yung lalaking naka-barong sa Table 13?”Remember: the goal is a happy marriage, not a successful headcount. Years from now, nobody will remember whether your wedding had 150 guests or 350. But you will remember whether you felt relaxed or overwhelmed. Whether conversations were genuine. Whether you actually had time to eat dinner before your coordinator dragged you toward another photo session.The best weddings are rarely the most extravagant ones. They are the ones where couples look around the room and genuinely feel surrounded by love, warmth, and people who sincerely support their future together.And honestly, if someone ends a friendship because they were not invited to your wedding, you probably saved money and emotional stress in one decision.
