MANILA -- The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is offering a one-time tax abatement program for micro businesses.In a statement, the BIR said this is for micro taxpayers whose gross sales for the year do not exceed P3 million and whose covered total basic tax liabilities or penalties do not exceed P80,000 for a taxable year. Eligible cases include delinquent accounts and assessments, whether preliminary or final and whether disputed or not, It also covers open stop-filer cases, including those involving taxpayers who have already stopped business operations.Under the regulations, taxpayers must apply for abatement with their local BIR office then pay a one-time abatement fee of P5,000 for each approved application. Once requirements are completed, the local revenue district office will issue a Certificate of Availment, which proves that the taxpayer availed of the program and that the covered case has been closed.BIR Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza said this is an opportunity for micro businesses to start with a clean slate. &quot;It is meant to help you settle past obligations without a heavy financial burden, update your records, and move forward as a compliant taxpayer,” he said. The BIR said this also complements its earlier memorandum circular simplifying the closure of businesses and the cancellation of tax registrations.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/5/20/bir-eases-business-closure-rules-speeds-up-tax-clearance-1756" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">BIR eases business closure rules, speeds up tax clearance</a></div>“Many micro taxpayers have already stopped operating but continue to carry unresolved tax obligations or inactive registrations.
