MANILA -- The Energy Regulatory Commission said around 30 electric cooperatives in Luzon and Visayas have asked the ERC to stagger the rate hike in June into 3 tranches or from June to August 2026.<div><a href="https://www.abs-cbn.com/news/business/2026/6/2/doe-confirms-spike-in-meralco-june-rate-due-to-recent-series-of-red-yellow-alerts-1914">DOE confirms spike in Meralco June rate due to recent series of red, yellow alerts</a></div>The overall increase ranges from P2 to over P3 per kWh, due to the series of red and yellow alerts in the Luzon and Visayas grids last month.ERC Chairman Nino Juan admitted that electricity prices at the spot market in Visayas will remain high because of the yellow alerts still happening there until today. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) again, on June 24, declared a yellow alert due to thinning electricity reserves in the Visayas. The yellow alert is in effect from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., as 25 power plants are out while 15 have derated capacities. While consumers have nothing to do with the unplanned shutdown of power plants, they bear the burden of paying higher electricity rates as private utilities and electric cooperatives source more expensive power supply in order to avoid service interruptions.
